Full-length female figure, frontal view, with her head in three-quarter profile to the right; standing in a niche, she holds a long sword in her right hand and a pair of scales in her left.
Engraving, 1617, signed on the plate at the lower right. At the lower left: 'Andrea del Sarto Inve' and at the lower right: Teodoro Cruger Scu 1617. At the bottom: 'CON GIUSTA LANCE MIA VIRTU COMPARTO'.
Based on a subject by Andrea D'Agnolo, known as Andrea Del Sarto (1486/1531).
This print faithfully reproduces, on the same verso, the figure of Justice frescoed by Andrea del Sarto in the Chiostro dello Scalzo in Florence, for which a payment is recorded in November 1515. It is part of a small series of four panels with allegories of the cardinal virtues (Hollstein 51-54) and is taken entirely from the grisaille figures flanking the portals of Andrea del Sarto's frescoes in the Chiostro dello Scalzo. The panels were engraved in 1617, the same year as Krüger's larger series of the Life of Saint John the Baptist (Hollstein 30-43). The Virtues differ in format and therefore cannot be part of the main series; but they were evidently produced contemporaneously and as part of the same campaign.
A magnificent work, rich in tone, printed on contemporary laid paper, trimmed to the plate and mounted on an antique collector's board, in excellent condition.
