Description

Etching and engraving, circa 1625/30, unsigned and without printing details.

Anonymous and extremely rare depiction of Villa d'Este in Tivoli.

A plan and bird's-eye perspective view of the gardens and palace of Villa d'Este in Tivoli, commissioned by Cardinal Ippolito II d'Este. The engraving documents the original layout of the Renaissance garden, with its famous terraces, geometric mazes, and monumental fountains, before the changes and restorations of subsequent centuries. It is based on the 1575 print by Etienne Duperac, replicated by Ambrogio Brambilla, Antonio Tempesta, and Mattheus Greuter.

This replica is printed on French laid paper from the first quarter of the 16th century; the "double C crossed with the Cross of Lorraine" (Lieure no. 29), a typical paper found in the engravings of the Lorraine artist Jacques Callot.

Magnificent work, rich in tone, with margins, in excellent condition. An extremely rare work, not listed in the repertoire.
