Antico Foro Romano

An ideal reconstruction of the Roman Forum based on archaeological surveys and reconstruction drawings by British architect Charles Robert Cockerell (1788–1863). This is a suggestive, idealized archaeological reconstruction of how the Roman Forum would have appeared at the height of its monumental expansion, rather than a view of the 19th-century ruins.

The work was etched and engraved in Rome around 1820–1830 by engravers Pietro Parboni and Giuseppe Acquaroni, and published by the renowned Roman publisher Tommaso Cuccioni, whose workshop was located on Via della Croce and later in Piazza di Spagna.

The lower margin features a special dedication " Al Merito insigne dei Sig.ri fra.lli Riepenhausen Pittori" addressed to the brothers Franz and Johannes Riepenhausen, German painters and engravers who were members of the Nazarene movement in Rome. On either side of the central title is a numbered list (from 1 to 16) identifying the main monuments of ancient Rome reconstructed in the scene, including the Temple of Vesta, the Temple of the Castors, the Tabularium, the Arch of Septimius Severus, the Temple of Saturn, and the Basilica of Paulus Aemilius.
