Description

Albumen on paper triptych, mounted on the original paper backing, c. 1879.

A panoramic view of Sydney and Port Jackson taken from the astronomical observatory. This photographic triptych, a sepia-toned albumen print, captures the Victorian-era cityscape and maritime landscape. The sweeping aerial view reveals Sydney’s transition from a Georgian settlement to a major Victorian port city, featuring a dense grid of rooftops, warehouses, and the commercial wharves of Miller's Point and the harbor below.

The work comes from a photo album published by P.E. Reynolds in 1879 to coincide with the Sydney International Exhibition, the first such fair held in the Southern Hemisphere.

The album, evidently published by Reynolds to capitalize on the influx of tourists visiting the exhibition, contains views of Government House, the Botanic Gardens, St. Andrew's Cathedral, the Town Hall, the General Post Office, the Colonial Secretary's offices, the Museum, the University, and the Zig-Zag Railway in the Blue Mountains.

However, the most notable feature is this panorama. Unfolding to a length of 55 cm, it offers a "General view of Sydney and Port Jackson from the Observatory" as they appeared in 1879: a Sydney sleepy by modern standards and a harbor teeming with sailing ships, long before the construction of the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House created the iconic scenery seen today.

P.E. Reynolds worked as a bookseller, stationer, and art dealer, and produced several catalogs for the exhibition; He undoubtedly demonstrated adaptability and commercial intuition in capitalizing on current events, including the Australian cricket team's tour of Australia, New Zealand, and Great Britain in 1877.
