Description

In the cartouche in the lower left corner is engraved the title: ASIAE NOVA DESCRIPTIO Venetiis Donati Rascicotti formis. In the decoration of the cartouche, in a small oval, we find the signature of the engraver of the plate: Giova[n] Batista Mazza fece. Orientation provided by a wind rose and by the names of the cardinal points: SEP[TENTRIO], MER[IDIES], ORI[ENS], OCI[DENS], the north is at the top. Map without graphic scale. Parallels and curved meridians drawn in the chart, from 10° to 10°, equatorial line graduated from degree to degree, from 71° 40' to 197° 30'.

The map of Asia engraved by Giovan Battista Mazza for the publisher Donato Rascicotti is part of the very rare series depicting the four continents. It is a precise copy of the map published by Abraham Ortelius in Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (1570), in turn based on the model of Giacomo Gastaldi, then updated in 1574. Given the extreme rarity of the map, it is little known in the literature.

Giovanni Battista Mazza was an engraver and printer active in Venice in the last years of the 16th century. With his elegant and precise mark, he engraved several charts, later marketed by Donato Rasciotti, and also a large planisphere by Giuseppe Rosaccio, dated 1597, in which he signed Giovan Battista Mazza venetiano Maestro delle stampe della Zecha de Venetia. Donato Rascicotti was a publisher, merchant and printer of Brescian origin but active in Venice, and perhaps also in Bologna and Rome. Sometimes is indicated as Rasciotti and Rosigotti. According to some, he should be identified with Donato Resegato "printer of drawings", arrested in Rome in 1577 on the charge of having stolen drawings from the workshop of Lafreri. In Venice his workshop was at Ponte dei Barettieri.

An article on the work was published in the magazine The Map Collector (1998) by Richard Casten and Thomas Suarez, who point out that Rascicotti's Asia is the first map to accurately depict the morphology of the island of Luzon in the Philippines. A second issue includes both Rascicotti's editorial imprint and the signature of engraver Mazza.

The map was reprinted, after about a century, by the Remondini typography. This edition still retains the names of the authors. At the Newberry Library in Chicago there is an exemplar of the map without editorial indications that, from the abrasions visible in the cartouche, we believe may represent the last printing of the plate.

Exemple in the second state of three described in Bifolco-Ronca, with Remondini's address.

Etching and engraving, impressed on contemporary laid paper, with margins, in perfect condition. Very rare.

Donato RASCICOTTI (Attivo 1572 – 1598)

Editore, commerciante e tipografo di stampe, di origine bresciana ma attivo a Venezia, e forse anche a Bologna e Roma. A volte viene indicato come Rasciotti e Rosigotti.
