Description

A very rare map - based on that of Nicolas Sanson, published in Paris in the mid of 17th Century - printed in Naples by Paolo Petrini's in 1700.

The map is part of the Atlante Partenopeo, a complex publishing operation put in place by the Neapolitan bookseller and printer Petrini to collect many of the maps he produced from the last decade of the 17th century onward, taken substantially from Guillaulme Sanson, Nicolas De Fer and Giacomo Cantelli, and published with updates also for much of the 1700s by his son Nicola.

Petrini's atlas represented for the Kingdom of Naples, the equivalent of the Mercurio Geografico printed in Rome by the De Rossi printing house and circulated mainly in the Papal States.

It is most likely that Petrini, a small local publisher with rare foreign trade, was inspired by De Rossi's map of Asia, which was derived from Sanson's original.

In the cartouche at upper left we find the indication of derivation from Nicolas Sanson: Corretta et aumentata secondo le Relationi più moderne da N. Sanson d'Abbeville Geografo di sua Maestà Crist.na in Pariggi with the imprint A spese di Paolo Petrini et da lui si vendono in Napoli, a S. Biaggio de Librari l'anno 1700. Example of the first state of two, with the date 1700. A second state was printed with the date 1766.

Copperplate engraving, contemporary coloring, in excellent condition. Very rare.
