Description

Andrea PIGONATI (Siracusa, 1734 – Napoli, 28 agosto 1790)

Andrea Pigonati (Syracuse, 1734 – Naples, August 28, 1790) was a lieutenant colonel in the Army Corps of Engineers, an engineer, and director of ports in the Bourbon kingdom. In 1759, he was sent to Ustica by King Charles III of Bourbon, along with military engineer Giuseppe Valenzuola, as part of the project to populate that island. Upon his return from that experience, he published a pamphlet notable for its scientific and naturalistic notes. In it, Pigonati also revealed the royalist and reformist positions that would characterize his work. His interest later turned to the classical antiquities of Sicily, and he carried out an interesting work measuring and surveying the island's ancient monuments.
