Engraving, circa 1580, unsigned and without printing details.
Based on a subject by Girolamo Muziano, the original drawing of which is preserved in the Uffizi Gallery.
It depicts the Rest on the Flight into Egypt with the Holy Family, Saint Elizabeth, and the infant Saint John the Baptist holding the hand of the Child Jesus. An outdoor landscape with a shelter of branches and cloth, a donkey in the background, and detailed trees typical of the late Italian Renaissance. The Latin inscription at the bottom reads: "Ut puerum baptista puer miratur Iesum, sic mirentur eum qui petere astra volunt" (As the boy Baptist will admire the child Jesus, so will those who desire to reach the stars).
The print is attributed to the Roman engraver Bernardino Passeri or to an anonymous follower. Stylistic similarities with other prints by Passeri, also depicting the Rest in Egypt, lead us to catalog it under the name Passeri.
A rare work, not described in the catalogues. One example is in the collection of the Rijksmuseum; another, like Bernardino Passeri, was sold at auction (Berlin, Galerie Bassenge, Nov. 2009, lot 5167, p. 100).
A magnificent work, rich in tone, printed on contemporary laid paper, trimmed to the plate, in perfect condition.

Bernardino Passeri (Ancona, 1540 – Rome, 1588) was an Italian engraver, painter, and illustrator. Of his works from his Roman period, only the drawings he provided for the illustrations of a small number of books printed in Rome and Antwerp are known. He is credited with several free prints, as well as a large number of the 55 prints illustrating Lorenzo Gambara's Rerum sacrarum liber, printed by Christophe Plantin in Antwerp in 1576. However, only one is signed by him, while another print bears the names of the engravers Pieter van der Borcht and Jan Wierix. He was the author of the fifty drawings of the life of Saint Benedict of Nursia, engraved by Aliprando Caprioli and adorning the Vita et miracula sanctissimu patris Benedicti. They would have a decisive influence on defining the iconography of the saint itself, having been widely imitated by later artists, such as the brothers Hieronymus, Johannes and Anton Wierix, Karel van Mallery, Nicolaes de Bruyn, Martin Nuyts, Adriaen Collaert, and Jan Collaert. Passeri also produced several engravings for the work Saint Cecilia. Vita et matyrium S. et gloriosae (Rome, c. 1590), which focuses on the life of Saint Cecilia.
