Description

View of the Grand Canal on the day of the regatta (4 March 1709) given in honour of the King of Denmark, the water crowded with elaborately decorated boats and barges for the occasion.

After Luca Carlevariis.

Etching, circa 1709, lettered with title above image 'Rappresentatzione della regatta solenne fatta in Venezia sopra il Canal Grande nel di IIII. marzo M.D.CCIX per divertimento di sua maestà il Re di Danimarca.' Below the image is an extensive key identifying the principal participants and main architectural features. Designer identified lower left 'Luca Carlevarijs Pinsit.'; printmaker identified lower right 'Ioseph Baronus Incid. Venes.'.

Example of the third state, with the number 58 added at lower right.

A fine impression, printed on contemporary laid paper with “three moons” watermark, with margins, in good condition.

The etching depicts the regatta held in honor of the second visit of King Frederick IV of Denmark to Venice on May 4, 1709. The scene shows the Grand Canal from the Rialto Bridge with Palazzo Foscari on the left and Palazzo Contarini on the right, as indicated in the legend below, which lists the buildings along the canal and the principal boats (peotas) of the Venetian notables. In the background is the ornate “macchina” (where prizes were distributed) and the “bissona” (the large gondola) carrying the king. The original painting by Luca Carlevaris is preserved in Fredericksborg Castle in Denmark. In 1711, the artist painted a replica (with slight differences in the details), formerly in the Lazzaroni Collection in Rome, and since 1986 at the J. P. Getty Museum. Baroni's engraving reproduces the painting in Denmark.
