Description
Etching, circa 1781, signed on the plate lower right.
It depicts the Allegory of Justice, based on a work painted by Francesco Solimena in the sacristy of the church of San Paolo Maggiore in Naples.
The composition was drawn by Jean-Honoré Fragonard (Fragonard del.) and engraved by Benoît-Louis Henriques (Henriques sculp.) and appeared in the famous publication Voyage pittoresque de Naples et de Sicilie by the Abbé de Saint-Non (1781-1786).
Justice is depicted seated on clouds, brandishing her sword and holding scales, overlooking a defeated allegorical figure at her feet.
A beautiful work, printed on contemporary laid paper, in excellent condition.

French engraver / printmaker; in Russia 1772-1774, hence his titles of imperial engraver and member of the Imperial Academy of Saint-Petersburg; presented by Le Bas at the Académie (1782) but, as he did not engrave his 'morceau de réception', never actually became a member. The British Museum also gives addresses for him in Paris.
