The Martyrdom of St Barbara; the saint kneeling at centre, with tied hands and looking up in agony, a man standing at left, supporting her head with one hand and holding a sword in the other, a tower in background at right; second state with the angels in clouds in top right corner; after Jan Boeckhorst

Willem Basse was a draughtsman and etcher in manner of Rembrandt; mainly active in Amsterdam.
Born in Amsterdam; pupil of his father Jan Basse; from 1638 etchings after Goltzius; later on influenced by Rembrandt; died in Amsterdam. Plates dated from 1628 to 1648; mostly unsigned, so formerly attributed to F. Bol or Adriaen van Ostade.

A fine impression, trimmed to the platemark, good condition. Long attributed to Van Dyck.
