Description

Rural landscape; in the foreground, a shepherd rests in the shade of a tree. In the background, a small village perched on a rock.

Etching, 1635, signed and dated on the plate at the bottom "Girolamo Saracini F. PG. I 1635".

An extremely rare work, undescribed and not present in any major museum collection.

Very little conflicting information is known about Girolamo Saraceni. A series of engravings of the Life of Saint Diego, signed by Simone Guillain and printed in Rome by Francois Collignon in 1646, is dedicated to him. In the dedication, he is addressed as “Girolamo Saracini perugino intendente et amatore della professione” [Girolamo Saracini from Perugia, expert and amateur of the profession].

Collignon likely refers to his profession as an engraver and printer.

A magnificent work, printed on contemporary laid paper, trimmed to the plate, in excellent condition.
