Description

Etching, circa 1595, signed with the monogram 'HW' and a bunch of grapes at lower right.

Only state.

Superb impression, printed on contemporary laid paper, with watermark “coat-of-arms” (Briquet, 2177), applied on a paperframed in ink, trimmed to the platemark, just worn, generally in good condition. On the back, an ownership inscription Riggall Colln Sale June 6th, 7th & 8th 1901 Lot 326»

Nagler suggested that the print was after a painting or design by Friedrich Sustris or Christoph Schwartz, but Geissler has rejected the suggestion after Schwartz.

The work is very rare.

The German painter Hans Weiner, in allusion to the genial beverage from which his name is derived, marked his works with the sign of a bunch of grapes. His graphic works is limited to three subjects.
