A perspective view of the Cortile del Belvedere and the Vatican Gardens in Rome, based on the design and engraving originally created in 1574 by the artist and cartographer Mario Cartaro, dedicated to Pope Gregory XIII.
It depicts the vast Cortile del Belvedere complex—conceived by Donato Bramante—which connected the Apostolic Palace with the Villa del Belvedere.
This anonymous print, bearing no publisher's imprint, is dedicated to Innocent X, who reigned as pope from 1644 to 1655. Visible are St. Peter's Basilica undergoing transformation, the Casino of Pius IV at the center, and terraced gardens featuring fountains and groves.
The print—which, unlike earlier versions, shows the dome of St. Peter's—was likely produced in Rome by the De Rossi printing house around 1650.
Etching, in excellent condition. Rare.
