Spoleto

Finely executed pencil and ink drawing on paper.

The sheet, typical of the style of 19th-century Grand Tour travelers, was originally part of a travel notebook.

The panoramic view depicts Spoleto with the famous Ponte delle Torri; the right side of the image highlights the city's monumental medieval aqueduct, known as the Ponte delle Torri (Tower Bridge), characterized by its imposing, tall arches spanning the deep valley. At the top of the hill, in the center, stands the fortified structure of the Rocca Albornoziana, dominating the entire urban skyline.

The drawing is unsigned, and we have not been able to identify the artist, who is one of the large group of cultured artists, travelers, or talented amateur draftsmen who visited Italy in the mid-19th century to immortalize its most picturesque landscapes. Works of this type—animated views by artists of the Grand Tour or the early post-unification period—possess considerable historical and documentary value, as they depict the urban layout before the major building transformations and restorations of the twentieth century.
