The English navigator Walter Raleigh (1552 ca.-1618) conducts several missions in Virginia between 1584 and 1587 and in the Orinoco in 1595, the same year in which he published The discovery of the large, rich, and beautiful Empire of Guiana, with a fairly accurate map of the places visited. Vice-commander of the English fleet, Raleigh was held in high esteem by Queen Elizabeth: the death of her will be accused of connivance in the conspiracy to promote the rise to the throne of Arabella Stuart, sentenced to death by James I, will be pardoned but imprisoned in the Tower of London, where he resumed his scientific and philosophical studies, released, after adventurous events that will take him still in the Orinoco, back to London will be imprisoned again to be executed shortly thereafter.
