Description

In de Gekroonde Lootsman: Het Kaarten-, Boekuitgevers En Instrumentenmakershuis Van Keulen Te Amsterdam, 1680-1885 (Dutch Edition).

This book provides a thematic overview of the history of the Van Keulen company. This was located under the name De Gekroonde Lootsman for more than two hundred years in a building on the corner of the Nieuwe Brugsteeg in Amsterdam, directly opposite where the Victoria Hotel is now located. From here, successive generations of this family sold maps, nautical instruments and books, in short, everything "of use to the seafarer".

In the nineteenth century the character of the company changed. The emphasis was shifted from production to sales. In addition, the range was expanded with foreign editions. Due to the transition from sailing to steam shipping, the number of ships and seafarers decreased and with it the number of customers for maps, instruments and books, so the company was closed in 1885.

After a general introduction, the first chapter discusses the development of nautical charts and sea atlases by the Van Keulen company. The books are discussed in the second chapter and the instruments are discussed in chapter three. The final chapter discusses the Van Keulen company in the nineteenth century.

Hardcover. Very good copy. Pages, spine bands and panel edges remain quite well-preserved overall.
