A scene of popular life, taken from the celebrated *Un an à Rome et dans ses environs*, printed in Paris by A. Firmin Didot in 1823.
This is a folio-format work containing 44 plates with 72 hand-colored lithographs (numbered 1–72) that depict the customs, festivities, and traditional attire of 19th-century Rome—a collection assembled by the author at the end of his stay in the capital.
The exquisite lithographs, which feature views of Rome as well as scenes of everyday life—reflecting the city’s secular and religious folklore throughout the course of a year—were drawn by Jean-Baptiste Thomas (1791–1838), who spent a couple of years in Rome as a guest of the French Academy. As a rare and highly sought-after first edition, this work serves as a valuable resource for the study of Roman customs and traditions in the early 19th century, documenting many festivities that have since disappeared.
Litograph with fine later hand colour, in good condition.
