Map from the German edition of Ptolemy's "Geographia" by Giovanni Antonio Magini, printed in Cologne in 1597.
Magini's "Geographia" which contains 64 finely engraved copperplates by Girolamo Porro, was first printed in Venice in 1596, with a Latin text. It was copied shortly thereafter by Petrus Keschedt, a Cologne publisher; the maps in the two editions are nearly identical, but closer examination reveals numerous differences.
The map was published in the 1597 Cologne edition of Ptolemy's Geographiae Universale an unauthorized and pirated reproduction of the acclaimed Venetian edition. Keschedt faithfully copied the Venetian plates for his German audience, introducing only minor stylistic variations.
Etching, finely hand-colored, in excellent condition.
