Description

Important plan of Genoa drawn “in the sole lap of its old walls with an exposition of the Churches and principal places,” as translated from the scroll with the title, prepared by engineer Giacomo Agostino Brusco in 1766 and engraved by Giovanni Lorenzo Guidotti.

It appeared in the first guide to Genoa, “Istruzione di quanto può vedersi di più bello in Genova in pittura, scultura, ed architettura”, compiled by painter Carlo Giuseppe Ratti. A second edition was published in 1780.

Genoa is collected within its fourteenth-century walls, without occupying all the space, but stretching along the coastline, extending the port area to its famous lighthouse. There are a total of 77 key-references of mainly religious buildings, supplemented by the plan indication of some streets and squares, the newer structures of the port, and two quarries from which materials needed for construction were obtained. A large wind rose facilitates the northward orientation of the map.

Giacomo Agostino Brusco (1736-1817) was a valiant military engineer in the pay of the Republic of Genoa; his are numerous works of excellent quality, and valuable today, with drawings, plans and studies relating to Genoa and its hinterland.

Etching, finely hand-colored, in excellent condition.
