Etching, 1600, signed on the plate lower right.
Developed from Pirro Ligorio's reconstruction of the Circus Maximus, first engraved by Nicolas Beatrizet in 1552 for Michele Tramezzino. A reconstruction of the Palace of the Caesars on the Palatine Hill is added.
The plate is taken from Onofrio Panvinio's book, De ludis Circensibus, printed in Venice in 1600 by G. Battista Ciotti and later in Padua in 1642 by Paolo Frambotti.
The Circus Maximus is located in "a long valley, crossed by a stream, between the Palatine and Aventine hills, with moderately steep sides: this is how the site where the Circus Maximus would later be built appeared. The site has been of vital importance since prehistoric times, linked as it is to the ford of the Tiber near Tiber Island and to all the economic activities connected to it". The engraving shows two obelisks: the taller one, that of Constantius II, now stands in Piazza San Giovanni in Laterano and is the tallest of Rome's obelisks, measuring 45.70 meters; the smaller one, that of Augustus, is now located in Piazza del Popolo.
A fine work, printed on contemporary laid paper, with thin margins, in good condition.

Among the most important works published: Commentarii ai Fasti (1558), i Commentarii ai Trionfi, i Comizi imperiali, le Antichità veronesi (unfinished). His great archaeological map of ancient Rome was produced in 1565. About the same time he began to collaborate with the French engraver Étienne Dupérac, who continued to provide illustrations for posthumous printings of Panvinio's works. His portrait by Titian is in the Galleria Colonna.
