Description

Rare map of the Italy and the of the western part of the Balkan peninsula - the ancient Illyria - designed by Conrad Mannert, engraved by Solbrig, and published by Christoph Fembo.

Georg Christoph Franz Fembo bought the publishing house of Homann Heirs of Nuremberg in 1813. He was not only a publisher and dealer in the maps he had acquired, but he ordered improved or new maps from scientists as well, and he even drew new maps himself. His son Christoph Melchior was less ambitious than his father, and the publishing activities of the house ended finally in 1852. All of Fembo’s folio-sized maps are rare.

Copperplate, with fine original colouring, very god condition.

Georg Christoph Franz FEMBO (1781 in Vohenstrauß ; †11.9.1848 in Nürnberg)

Christoph Fembo was originally a book printer and art dealer from Vohenstrauß. In 1804 he bought the publishing share of Friedrich Albrecht Monath (1765-1812) at Homann's map office for 20,500 guilders. In 1805 he took over from the heirs of Christoph Weigel (1654-1725) whose publisher. In 1813 he was able to acquire from Georg Christoph Franz (1747-1823) its share in the Homann publishing house for 18,800 guilders, which he became the sole owner. At his death, his son Christoph Melchior (1805-1876) immediately shut down the publisher. During the period of Fembos ownership, 66 new maps were published in large format in the Homann plates, 42 of them Fembo itself. In 1810 he also reissued the earth globe of Georg Moritz Lowitz (1722-1774).
