The work is not an essay on Italian maps of the sixtheenth century but a catalog of Italian cartography of sixtheenth century, a census of the entire Italian printed maps production. 151 maps, all illustrated, and 328 different editions described. Preceded by an introduction on the origins of Italian cartography, the main centers of production, the mechanisms that regulated the publication, the catalog is organized chronologically, opens with the national maps to examine then those of the northern, central and southern regions.

Each map, with a photographic reproduction, an extensive description and an historical-critical section, giving details of all the states and possible issues, as well as a complete census of all copies known in the public collections. A work that represents the first reasoned catalog of Italian cartography of the peninsula, an update of Monumenta Italia Cartographica by Roberto Almagià (1929), and of Maps in Italian Atlases of the Sixteenth Century, by Ronald V. Tooley (1939).
