Description

The Siege of Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar. A bird's-eye view of the siege and capture of Jerusalem by the Babylonian King Nebuchadnezzar, showing hundreds of soldiers, horses, and numerous siege engines and tents before the gates of the fortified city. An impressive large copper engraving by Picart after Jean Baptiste Martin, first published by Augustin Calmet in 1722.

Jean Baptiste Martin (1659–1735), known as "Martin des Batailles," was a prominent French battle painter, entrepreneur, and owner of a tapestry and wallpaper manufactory, and court painter to Louis XIV, primarily at Versailles. Bernard Picart (1673–1733) was a French engraver and book illustrator.

The map is taken from the Algemene kerkelyke en wereldlyke geschiedenissen des bekenden aard-kloots by Sugars Geerlof and Isaac Verburg, published in 5 volumes. Amsterdam: Gerard and Rudolf Wetstein, 1721-1728.

Etching with fine later hand colour, good condition.
