Description

Astronomical plate from the rare first edition of the Grande Atlante Geografico De Agostini, printed in Novara in 1922.

The De Agostini Publishing House was founded in Rome in 1901 by Giovanni De Agostini under the name "Primo Istituto Italiano di Cartografia." In the years leading up to World War I, a veritable national cartographic school arose at the Institute, enabling the creation of a very wide range of geographical, tourist and educational publications. Among the many, it is worth mentioning the l'Atlante Scolastico Moderno, the progenitor of a long series, and the famous "Calendario Atlante De Agostini", which came into being in 1904. In 1919, ruined by bad administration, the Company, which had moved to Novara since 1908, was put into liquidation and purchased by Marco A. Boroli and Cesare A. Rossi. For some time the two new owners continued to operate exclusively in the cartographic sector, the direction of which was entrusted to Prof. Luigi Visintin. In 1922 the "Grande Atlante Geografico" by far the first major Italian atlas, was published.

Color photolithography, minimal oxidation, otherwise in good condition.
