Description
The scene depicts a standing male academic nude, used as a study model for eighteenth-century art academies.
Taken from the monumental and historic Encyclopédie by Denis Diderot and Jean-Baptiste Le Rond d'Alembert.
The plate is engraved by Benoît-Louis Prévost based on an original drawing by Charles-Nicolas Cochin and represents one of the greatest expressions of art education during the Age of Enlightenment. The work was created specifically to enrich the illustrated plate volumes of the famous Encyclopédie ou Dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers (published in France between 1751 and 1780).
Charles-Nicolas Cochin the Younger (1715–1790), one of the most influential art theorists, draftsmen, and engravers at the court of Louis XV. Benoît-Louis Prévost (c. 1735–1804), Parisian master engraver renowned for his technical precision and for having signed numerous plates of Diderot's work.

Bonaventure Louis Prévost (Paris, March 11, 1733 – Paris, March 19, 1816) was a French engraver and draughtsman. Born "Bonnaventure Louis Prevost" in 1733, during his apprenticeship, he frequented the circle of the Chéreau and Huquier families, renowned engravers in the Rue Saint-Jacques neighborhood of Paris. Prévost was even entrusted with compiling the inventory of Jacques Chéreau's possessions. A pupil of Jean Ouvrier, Prévost was considered a skilled craftsman whose work far surpassed that of his master. He left behind more than sixty plates based on Cochin's drawings, works that have the merit of preserving his style with such perfection that it almost seems as if one can see the drawings themselves. The most famous of his works is undoubtedly the frontispiece of the last edition (1772) of Diderot and d'Alembert's Encyclopedia, depicting "Reason and Philosophy tearing the veil from Truth radiant with light", designed in 1764-1765 by Charles-Nicolas Cochin; the print was printed in 1770-1771. In 1794, Prévost was registered by the Committee of Security as a citizen residing on rue Saint-Hyacinthe in Paris, at the age of sixty: his name was actually Bonaventure-Louis. In 1804, he sold part of his print collection. Bonaventure Louis Prévost died on 19 March 1816 at the age of 83 in his Parisian studio at 5 rue Saint-Dominique d'Enfer. The inventory of his assets was made on March 30, 1816. He signed his works B. L. Prevost.
