The print was engraved by Alessandro Specchi on commission from Monsignor Alfonso Litta, President of Acqua Paola, upon completion of the work based on a design by architect Carlo Fontana. The Acqua Paola fountain, also known as the Fontanone del Gianicolo, was built to a design by Giovanni Fontana and Flaminio Ponzio as the terminal point of the Trajan aqueduct between 1610 and 1614 at the behest of Pope Paul V. It assumed its current appearance with the renovation carried out in the late 17th century by Carlo Fontana, who replaced the five existing basins with a single semicircular basin.

The print corresponds to the one indicated on p. 31, c. 8, of the " Indicedelle stampe intagliate in rame” of 1735: “Veduta della fontana dell'acqua Paola sul Gianicolo, fatta fabbricare da Paolo V. intagliata in acquaforte in foglio papale bajocchi 20 “(see A. Grelle Iusco, 1996, p. 202). The print is also included in the Index published by De Rossi in 1696 (p. 29, c. 10).

A magnificent work, rich in tone, printed on contemporary laid paper, with small margins, a light stain at the lower left, otherwise in excellent condition.
