Description

Titled "Venice," is a masterful work by William Miller after the original painting by Birket Foster, dating back to the 1860s. The print beautifully captures the essence of Venice, the "City of Water," with its intricate network of canals, iconic architecture, and bustling maritime activity. In the foreground, several gondolas glide gracefully across the calm waters, their gondoliers expertly navigating the labyrinthine waterways. The imposing Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute, with its magnificent dome and bell towers, dominates the skyline, its grandeur reflecting on the shimmering water. The print also showcases the Riva degli Schiavoni, a bustling waterfront promenade lined with historic buildings and moored boats.

View taken from Picturesque Europe: a delineation by pen and pencil of the natural features and the picturesque and historical places of Great Britain and the continent.

Picturesque Europe was a lavishly illustrated set of books published by D. Appleton & Co. in the mid-1870s based on their phenomenally successful Picturesque America. An edited form was reprinted in Europe by Cassell & Co. The books depicted nature and tourist haunts in Europe, with text descriptions and numerous steel and wood engravings. J.W. Whymper was among the engravers and directed the other artists on the project.
