A beautiful and extremely rare panoramic view of Bolzano, published in Mainz by Joseph Scholz in the mid-19th century.
The lithograph, based on an 1842 etching by Karl Ludwig Frommel (1789–1863), offers a splendid 19th-century view of the city of Bolzano. The vantage point is ideally positioned beyond the right bank of the Talvera River. The characteristic and majestic Dolomite peaks of the Catinaccio group (Rosengarten) rise in the background. The foreground is richly animated by figures and elegant period figures in traditional and high-ranking dress, strolling or conversing in the shade of pergolas and local vegetation.
Josef Scholz Publishing House (also known as Joseph Scholz or Scholz-Mainz) was a prominent German publisher and printer, active from 1793 to 1984. Specializing in illustrated children's books, board games, and paper theaters, the company was founded in Wiesbaden and moved its historic headquarters to Mainz in 1829. The founder, Josef Scholz, began the business in Wiesbaden in 1796, trading in paper and stationery. In 1829, the family opened a branch in Mainz, which quickly became the main production center, known for its finely hand-colored lithographs, genre prints, and cityscapes. Under the leadership of Christian Scholz, the founder's son, the publishing house expanded significantly during the 19th century. The company maintained its independence until 1984, when it was acquired. Today, vast collections of prints, books, and games produced by Jos. Scholz Mainz are held in prestigious museums and libraries, including the Mainz City Library and the British Museum.
