Die Tivoli Falle

View from the famous Payne's Universum (known in English as Pictorial World), a 19th-century illustrated periodical created by the English engraver and painter Albert Henry Payne (1812–1902). Published starting in the 1840s by his own publishing house (the Englische Kunstanstalt in Leipzig), the work enjoyed enormous success throughout Europe. It is distinguished by its extraordinary, high-quality steel engravings, accompanied by descriptive texts. The volumes offered readers of the time a veritable window on the world through various categories of illustrations. In particular, it contains landscape and urban views; detailed glimpses from every corner of the globe, including famous Italian destinations (such as the Milan Cathedral, Amalfi, the Trevi Fountain, Ischia, and Taormina) and European capitals.

Albert Henry Payne was a celebrated British steel engraver, painter, illustrator, and publisher, best known for his prolific work in Germany during the 19th century. Born in London on December 14, 1812, he learned the art of steel engraving in his homeland. In 1839, he settled in Leipzig, where he remained and worked for the rest of his life, obtaining citizenship in 1845. It was also in Leipzig that he founded the Englische Kunstanstalt ("English Art Institute") publishing house. He capitalized on the growing market for "penny prints," which were popular with tourists of the time.
