Ravello

Finely executed pencil and watercolor drawing on paper, circa 1830/40.

The sheet, typical of the style of 19th-century Grand Tour travelers, was originally part of a travel notebook.

It depicts a view of Ravello; at the center of the composition stands the unmistakable bell tower of the Duomo, characterized by its typical Moorish-influenced interlacing arches, while the mountainous profiles of the coast stand out in the background. The fountain, the piazza, and the ancient "Moresca" house, with their stunning natural position on a hilltop balcony overlooking the sea and the mountains, are among the most celebrated images of the traditional "Grand Tour," which from the 17th to the 19th century represented a travel itinerary and a rite of passage for Europe's elite. The tour became part of the collective memory through numerous paintings, drawings, and photographs in which it was reproduced. And, thanks to its evocative and picturesque setting and its unique panoramic position, the "Piazza della Fontana Moresca" has always been a source of inspiration for painters, photographers, and travelers from all over the world.

The drawing, likely from the English School, is unsigned, and we have not been able to identify the artist. He is one of the many cultured artists, travelers, or talented amateur draftsmen who visited Italy in the mid-19th century to immortalize its most picturesque landscapes. Works of this type - animated views signed by artists on the Grand Tour or in the early post-unification period - possess considerable historical and documentary value, as they depict the urban layout before the major building transformations and restorations of the 20th century.
