Description
Acquaforte, impressa su carta vergata coeva, rifilata all’interno della linea marginale, restauri perfettamente eseguiti agli angoli, per il resto in buono stato di conservazione.
Vespasiano Strada (Roma 1582 circa – 1622) fu pittore e incisore, figlio di un pittore spagnolo stabilitosi a Roma. Iscritto nel 1604 all’Accademia di San Luca e nel 1622 all’Accademia dei Virtuosi. Realizza opere soprattutto per committenze ecclesiastiche, ma la sua specialità, stando al Baglione, fu il "dipinger sopra de' corami, e sì bene li coloriva che tutti i coramari di Roma da lui si servivano e buon guadagno ne ritraeva". Emerge da questa nota lo stile di lavoro di un tipico artigiano-artista della Roma del XVII secolo, di buon mestiere.Bartsch gli attribuisce 21 bulini aventi come soggetto scene del Nuovo testamento o della vita dei Santi. Anche nell’uso della tecnica incisoria si evince una inclinazione ad effetti pittorici che per certi versi lo avvicinano a Ventura Salimbeni (Siena 1568 - 1613).

Italian painter and etcher of Spanish origin. He is thought to have trained with Ventura Salimbeni, who deeply influenced his art. Baglione listed frescoes in the oratory of S Giacomo di Scossacavalli, in S Maria d’Aracoeli (showing the Miracles of S Diego) and in the cloister of S Onofrio, all Roman churches, as being among his most important works as a painter. Twenty-one etchings have been attributed to him by Bartsch; they feature religious subjects and include variants on the theme of the Virgin and Child. They are uneven in quality and hence presumed to have been executed in different phases of the artist’s career.
