Description

Etching, mid-sixteenth century, monogrammed in plate below.

After Guido Reni.
Example in the second state of two. Beautiful proof, printed on contemporary laid paper with watermark "coat of arms with eagle" dates back to the mid-seventeenth century, trimmed to the copperplate, small abrasions visible on the reverse, otherwise in excellent condition.

Bolognese painter and engraver was a pupil of Francesco Gessi. His graphic work so far known amounts to 6 etchings depicting mythological works by Guido Reni and Giovanni Andrea Sirani. The date of birth of Scarsello is documented at January 19, 1624, while that of his death is not exactly known, but presumably occurred after 1678. Malvasia, in fact, describes the date 1678 worked in Turin, where he arrived after having previously worked in Bologna and Milan
