Description

View taken from A Tour through the Southern Provinces of the Kingdom of Naples, published to London in 1821.

Richard Keppel Craven's tour starts from Naples, arrives in Foggia and continues to Terra d'Otranto, at Capo di Leuca. The author says he was driven to the journey by his passion for the sea and by the widespread curiosity that English people have for these lands. After an introduction on the history of Puglia, which dates back to the time of Magna Graecia, the author continues with the list of the number of inhabitants for each city visited, and the description of its geographical context. The narration is given in the form of chronicle, which alternates the description of the landscapes to detailed and numerous historical information.

Copperplate, finely hand-coloured, in very good condition. Rare.
