Description

Beautiful view of Piazza Navona from the famous travel magazine "Le Tour du Monde" (founded by Édouard Charton and published by Hachette), which featured the detailed accounts and diaries of French writer Francis Wey dedicated to the Eternal City, later collected in the celebrated volume Voyage à Rome.

To illustrate these texts, prominent illustrators of the time (such as Hubert Clerget and Charles-Joseph Mettais) produced live views of Rome. Their drawings were then printed on woodblocks (xylography) by master engravers, most notably Jean Gauchard (often associated with his colleague Brunier).

Among the most famous prints created by Gauchard for the magazine are the views of Piazza Navona, which depict the monumental Church of Sant'Agnese in Agone, Bernini's splendid Fountain of the Four Rivers, and the bustling daily life of the open-air markets that historically animated the Roman square.

Woodcut, in excellent condition.
