After a rather reluctant military career - his passion from the beginning was art and acting - Friedrich was active from 1818 as a journalist and writer. His preferred genre became popular-scientific, regional and historical works that were intended to serve the general education, especially of a youthful audience. His "Wundermappe" was very popular at the time as an art-historical and regional reference work and, along with Meyer's Universum and Brockhaus's Bilder-Atlas, is today considered one of the most important works of the 19th century.
