Description
Bella tavola raffigurante i venditori di fritti nel giorno di San Giuseppe sulla Piazza della Rotonda, con il Pantheon sullo sfondo. Scena di costume popolare tratta dal celebre Un an a Rome at dans ses environs, stampato a Paris, de L'imprimerie de A. Firmin Didot, 1823.
Si tratta di un’opera in-folio, con 44 tavole contenenti 72 litografie colorate a mano (numerate 1-72) raffiguranti usanze, festività e costumi della Roma dell'Ottocento assemblata dall'Autore al termine del suo soggiorno nella capitale.
Le bella litografie, che raffigurano vedute di Roma e scene popolari tipiche del folclore civile e religioso della città (nel corso di un anno), furono disegnate da Jean-Baptiste Thomas (1791-1838) che soggiornò un paio d'anni a Roma ospite dell'Accademia di Francia. Quest'opera, rara e ricercata in prima edizione, rappresenta quindi un’interessante fonte per lo studio degli usi e costumi romani agli inizi dell'ottocento perché molte delle feste che mostra sono oggi scomparse.

Antoine-Jean-Baptiste Thomas (Paris, October 31, 1791 - 1833) was a French painter. Very little is known about Thomas's life and works. In 1816 he won the Prix de Rome for painting and was therefore accepted at the French Academy in Rome from November 1816 to December 1818. From his stay in Rome Thomas drew motifs for a folio volume Un an à Rome et dans ses environs published in Paris in 1823. He died in Paris in 1833 or 1834.
