Pietà, after the statue by Michelangelo set in a landscape, with Joseph of Arimathea, the Virgin and another holy woman supporting the body of Christ
Engraving, circa 1575, unsigned. Lettered with 'Mich Angeli Bonaroti Florentini manu sculpta Romae' and 'cum privilegio D. Greg. XIII'.
Example of the second state, with inscription at the bottom.
Beautiful proof, printed on contemporary laid paper without watermark, with thin margins, in excellent condition.
The engraving undoubtedly belongs to the pontificate of Gregory XIII (1572-1585), whose privilege it bears, probably dating from the mid-1570s, due to its still uncertain style and the influence of Cornelis Cort. It is curious that, even though the central group is placed on a stone base, clearly reminiscent of a sculptural original, the scene is enriched with narrative elements, such as the basket with nails, the open tomb, and the three crosses in the background. At that time, the sculpture was located in the Bandini garden at the Quirinale, and it was there that Alberti must have seen it.
Two sketches on a sheet preserved in the Uffizi can be attributed to Cherubino Alberti: they show the Pietà from two different points of view, one from the side without the leg, the other from the front with the leg, probably related to this engraving. In addition, Rosenberg cites a drawing in Berlin, Kupferstichkabinett, which he believes to be preparatory for this print.
