Description

Very rare view drawn and etched by Philippe Pallot.

The view would belong to a series of 12 plates (some of which are dated 1686 and signed P. Pallot del. inc.) engraved by Philippe Pallot. The collection is mentioned only by Charles Le Blanc in his famous Manuel de l'amateur d'estampes (1854/88), while we could not find any trace of it in other bibliographies. We found single works conserved at the Raccolta Bertarelli and at the Biblioteca Panizzi (only one engraving in both collections) while 6 engravings of the series result from the auction sale of the Petzold collection (1842) that defines them already rare:

"Suite de 6 est[ampes] rares, in- 8. Gravées à l'eau-forte et marques Fil. Pallot del. inc. 1686" (see Benjamin Petzold, Catalogue de vente d'une belle collection d'estampes colligée par Benj. Petzold, p. 63, n. 916).

There is very little bibliographical information on the author, of whom these are probably the only works. Benezit describes him as "dessinateur et graveur au burin en 1680. Grava des vues de Rome".

The engraver's signature is on a boulder in the lower center.

Magnificent proof, printed on contemporary laid paper, with intact margins, in perfect condition.
