Description

Engraving, after 1609, signed at lower right.

A fine impression, on contemporary laid paper with unidentified watermark, trimmed to the platemark, very good condition.

The work depicts foreground, mens brandishing weapons and various tools that turn against the Death that, before the crowd, is about to shoot an arrow. At the right, the allegory of Time, preceded by Fame, seems to want to escape. In the background different animals advancing menacingly against a Death also equipped with a bow and arrow.

This work is a mirror image copy of the engraving published by Bolswert, after a painting by David Vinckeboons -1610 - (Hollstein, Dutch, XXX-VII, p. 20, n. 10).

Gori Gandellini attributing this work to Francesco Merlini (Siena, active in the first decade of the seventeenth century), while Romagnoli - biografo of Sienese artists - ascribed correctly to Orazio Bruni.

A work of great rarity.
