Description

Etching and engraving, circa 1690, signed at lower right.

From the set of the Seven Liberal Arts, after Louis Boullogne.

This work is part of the "Le Cabinet des beaux Arts ou Recueil d'Estampes gravées d'apres les Tableaux d'un plafond ou les beaux Arts sont representés Avec l'explication de ces memes Tableaux" (Paris, G. Edelinck) 1690; containing 12 plates after a ceiling painting representing Apollo, Mercury, Minerva and allegories of the Liberal Arts, by and after various French artists.

A good impression, printed on contemporary laid paper, trimmed to the platemark, traces of surface dirt on recto, glue on verso, overall in good condition. Example of the second issue published by François Chereau.

Benoît Audran I, known as "le Vieux"-to distinguish him from his nephew and godson Benoît Audran le Jeune . was a French engraver. The third son of Germain Audran, Benoît left his hometown at a very young age, having begun his training with his father, to come under the direction of his uncle, the famous Girard, who better than anyone else was able to give him good advice and direct him on the path he intended to follow. Under his guidance he made rapid progress and was soon able to stand on his own feet. Having signed a large number of piety pictures engraved with more care than usual for this type of print, having executed after Antoine Dieu, after Hallé and after Coypel, a number of vignettes intended to accompany a text or to be included in printed works, he signed several plates that gave him a distinguished rank among French engravers. His fame rests on historical subjects and portraits.
