Description

La Musique: Euterpe, les ris et les jeux.

Etching and engraving, circa 1720, signed at lower right.

From the set of the Seven Liberal Arts, after Charles Antoine Coypel (Paris 1694–1752).

This work is part of the "Le Cabinet des beaux Arts ou Recueil d'Estampes gravées d'apres les Tableaux d'un plafond ou les beaux Arts sont representés Avec l'explication de ces memes Tableaux" first published by Gerard Edelinck, Paris 1690; containing 12 plates after a ceiling painting representing Apollo, Mercury, Minerva and allegories of the Liberal Arts, by and after various French artists. Example of the second issue published by François Chereau, after 1718, with this plate engraved by the son of Gerard Edelinck.

A good impression, printed on contemporary laid paper, trimmed to the platemark, traces of surface dirt on recto, glue on verso, overall in good condition.

Nicolas-Étienne Edelinck (9 April 1681 – 11 May 1767) was a French engraver, was born to a family of engravers in Paris, the eighth son of Gérard Edelinck. Although he had the advantage of his father's instruction, and of studying in Italy, he never rose above mediocrity. He engraved some portraits, and a few plates for the Crozat Collection. He died in Paris in 1768.
