Description

Etching and engraving, circa 1592, without signature. A fine impression, printed on contemporary laid paper with “shield with star” watermark, with small margins, perfect conditions.

The engraving shows Clement VIII, born Ippolito Aldobrandini (1536-1605), portrait of three quarters, sitting with his right hand resting on the arm of the chair and the fisherman's ring clearly visible, while his left hand holding a book , the ' index the pages to not miss the sign. In the upper right stands his coat of arms: a band double crenellated approached by six eight-pointed stars.

In the margin runs the inscription Florentinus Pope Clement VIII . Although he was born in Fano, the Aldobrandini family was originally from Florence and her father, a prominent lawyer , who was forced to leave the city to disagreements with the Medici. Ippolito Albobrandini was elected to the papacy , after 20 days of conclave , January 30, 1592. His pontificate lasted 13 years, until his death in 1605. Under his pontificate, was condemned to the stake Giordano Bruno. The work is stylistically similar to the previous portrait , which depicts Pius IV , on which is written the name of Nicolas van Aelst as a publisher, to whom, therefore, we also attribute this one.

An extremely rare work, not described by the repertoires consulted.
