Description

Etching and engraving, ca. 1616/20, signed in plate at right side with Goltzius's monogram "HG fe." and at lower left I. P. Beerendrecht excu.

Anonymous work, printed, edited and probably also engraved by a young Beerendrecht, although attributed by some to Jacob de Gheyn II (1565-1629):

Excess never pays. A young man, sitting on a small bench in front of a vineyard, is drinking two glasses at the same time. At his feet are a book, an hourglass and a torn silver purse. The inscription underneath these objects tells us the meaning of the work: "All of this stems from gluttony and drunkenness."  Overindulgence wastes your time, money and damages your health.

The text below the print and the objects on the ground in front of the figure refer to the consequences of excessive alcohol consumption:

Aenschout Jonckmans die dit hanteeren

U tijt, geld, memorie wert ghy hier duer quijt

U Welvaren, gesontheyt, levende hier in oneeren

Met een beroyt hooft, sonder achterdocht, tot elcx verwijt.

Johannes Pietersz. Beerendrecht, (Alkmaar 1590 circa – Haarlem 1645 circa) was a publisher and etcher, member of the Guild of Haarlem in 1616 and he worked also as a dealer in the same city.

A good impression, printed on contemporary laid paper, with margins, very good condition. A very rare work.
