Description

Etching, 1836/39, signed in plate at lower left Rossini Ar. dis. dal vero ed inc.

Plate from the rare series Viaggio pittoresco da Roma a Napoli, published in 1839 in 80 plates, dedicated to his friend Salvatore Betti.

The work is executed between 1836 and 1839, the year of its publication consisting of 80 plates, illustrates the journey from Rome to Naples along the Appian Way. The author wants to provide the traveler with an educated and intelligent guide to accompany him along the route of the post stations. The journey begins at Porta del Popolo and following the axis of Via del Corso, Piazza Venezia, Fori Imperiali and Colosseum, arriving at Porta San Giovanni and leaving the Appian Way in the direction of Albano.

Already by the mid-18th century, with the publication in 1745 in Naples of the Via Appia riscoperta e descritta da Roma a Brindisi by F. M. Pratili, the Via Appia had become an object of interest and research for scholars and artists. Rossini shows that he was familiar with and perhaps used some watercolor drawings, executed by Carlo Labruzzi in 1789, on behalf of Sir Richard Colt Hoare, which were intended to illustrate the journey he had decided to undertake influenced by reading Horace's "Satires" (30 B.C.) in which the author narrates the journey he made from Rome to Brindisi in the company of Maecenas and other of his friends

In the Spiegazione delle Tavole (Explanation of the plates), in addition to historical-artistic and archaeological news, information is included on the population and agricultural activities of the countryside and villages that come along the journey. The author's intention with this work is to be a user-friendly guide for the traveler during the various stages of the journey, which is why he resorts to the choice of the album format. With the Viaggio Pittoresco, the animation of the views is no longer just the representation of the Roman commoner, Pinelli-derived, but is the introduction for the first time, also of members of those social classes for which his works were intended. The choice of this new social setting will be one of the characteristics of the works of his later years.

The technique now reaching full maturity, reveals a fluency of sign and in the use of strongly accentuated chiaroscuro, Rossini reconfirms his vocation for clear and pleasing narrative.

Magnificent proof, printed on contemporary paper, with full margins, in excellent condition. Rare.
