Description

Etching and engraving, 1674, signed and dated in the plate at the top. Example in the third state of three, with the date 1750. Magnificent proof, printed on two sheets of contemporary laid paper , trimmed to the copperplate, small restorations perfectly executed in the margins and at the central junction, otherwise in excellent condition.

The great map of Latium by Innocent Mattei Lazio, engraved by Michelangelo Marinari, is dedicated to Pope Clement X and printed for the first time in 1674. Of this edition you know a single copy in the Bibliotheca Alessandrina in Rome. Likely that very few copies have been printed, due to the death of Pope A second issue of the map, identical to the previous one, is made in 1676 and dedicated to the Marquis Don Luigi Mattei, probably a noble kinsman of the author. The latest edition of the map is from 1750, where the date is the only change. Mattei, of Roman origin, was appointed by Pope Clement X as the geographer of the Papal States and confirmed by his successor Innocent X. In 1666 the public the map Tavola esatta dell’antico Latio e Nova Campagna di Roma, a kind of offshoots of the late sixteenth-century model of Eufrosino of Volpaia. This new map, much bigger and rich of geographical information, was born eight years after the first job. The hydrography of the map is very rich and are represented all the coastal lake basins in the region. Even the topography shows remarkable accuracy, but the innovative aspect of the map is indicating mines and quarries. In addition, the map has a value because it indicates administrations, with the initials RC to all locations belonging to the Apostolic Camera.
Also notable is the combination of modern elements to the classic ones with the names of ancient peoples highlighted in uppercase.

Beautiful example of this rare and important map of Lazio.
